# For a software item specification, what is the purpose of the "Input" and "Output" field in Jira?

The input / output field could be used as a field to exhibit the necessary inputs within a specification and how these inputs are necessary to achieve the intended output. Per [WI-02 Software Item Specification:](https://docs.ketryx.com/Nfv9ttHxYK0eaVZFq3wl/work-instructions/wi-02-software-item-spec#4.-item-schema)

- _Inputs_ (rich text): Inputs to this software item.

- _Outputs_ (rich text): Outputs of this software item.

Please note that this field is not required by default to approve a specification.
